Last night we had another earthquake. This one didn't feel terribly strong to me but I was about 60 miles from the epicenter. It did last a long time.
I was lying in bed watching the beginning of NCIS and there was a subtle shake, just enough to tell me what was happening and make me wonder if it would get bigger (the P wave), then there was a decrease but a sense of continued shaking, then it got stronger again (the S wave).
The whole thing lasted about 15 seconds. It doesn't seem like much time, but the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 was only 15 seconds, as well. It took down a section of doubledecker freeway in Oakland and a portion of the deck of the Bay Bridge. 57 people died then.
But that earthquake was 6.9...last night was only a 5.6 and not close by. But now's not the time to feel complacent about that since folks at USGS are concerned that it has put additional stress on the Hayward fault (the one that runs through my neighborhood less than a mile from my apartment and work). This is the fault that's due for a major event.
Perhaps I'll pick up some water along with the extra candy I'm getting tonight at Safeway for Halloween.

I read about the earthquake and was worried about you. I'm glad that you're ok, and that it wasn't worse for anyone. I hope it stays that way!
