So a couple of weeks ago, I was talking to S about something I'd seen on some Discovery Channel show awhile ago...about methane at the bottom of the ocean, and it's potential effect on global warming. He was teasing me because I only had sketchy information...and I should remember that when you are talking chemicals to a chemical engineer, it's pretty important to have the details in order.
I later reinvestigated, and the issue is frozen methane which is in danger of melting as ocean temperatures rise, releasing the gases into the atmosphere and causing further warming. Well, S tells me last night, there's an even bigger problem (and this may be old news to some of you). It seems that there is a portion of western Siberia (about the size of Germany and France) in which the permafrost is melting. What the permafrost has kept frozen is a peat bog that has been creating and storing methane gas for a very, very, very long time.
Now, it's not going to burst out all at once, but even a slower release than is predicted could cause a 10 - 25% further increase in temperatures than has already been predicted.
So...anyone want to invest in land in Canada with me? Because my apartment's going to be part of the Bay.
Well, I'm off to do my work. You all have a pleasant day!

According to the American Red Cross, the only state that is free from Natural disasters (earthquake, tsunami, tordano, hurricane, etc.) is North Dakota. Land is cheap, Global warming could only help, and there would be a lot less paperwork involved, due to the fact that your not emigrating to a different country. Let me know if you want to do a land deal, I might know some poeple :)
Ah, but Cody, the American Red Cross is wrong. While it doesn't flood every year, the Red River which runs into North Dakota has indeed flooded with some pretty devastating effects. This is especially true when particularly snowy winters are followed by particularly wet springs (2 things which are supposed to increase as global warming changes our climates).
The 1997 flood of the Red River, crested in Fargo at 39 feet...In Minnesota, an entire small town was completely submerged (and those parts of the downtown which were sticking above the water caught fire).
But if you follow the science in The Day After Tomorrow, the warming actually causes another ice age. In this case, we should all move to Mexico with Ka. But perhaps to an inland city, not an oceanfront property. You know, for that pesky initial warming part.
You know Spins, I checked the Red Cross website where I saw the info before, and lo and behold, they don't consider floods a natural disaster. Go figure. I remember the Red River flood, that was devasating. I guess that there is no where to hide.
You can stay with me. I know have a luxury boat at my disposal.
I think I'm with Aravis on this one and will be heading to Mexico.
I'd have to get some air-con though for the meantime!
