It's in the news...

Our man Flash has been back lately, and last week he did a feature on the news in his hometown. So I thought I might do the same thing.

But I don't get a paper now that things are on-line, so I googled the Oakland Tribune. Most major city's newspapers have their own website, but Oakland, overshadowed by "the City" of San Francisco as it so often is, uses an intermediary. I must admit that I get my news most from www.sfgate.com which is the SF Chronicle's online site. So I guess I can't kvetch too much.

Anyway, off I went to check out the headlines and I read through them and came away heartily depressed. Except for the articles looking at the history of the Black Panther movement and the reporting on the Black Cowboy event yesterday, it was pretty much dismal. Oakland is facing its highest murder rate in over 10 years...the shootings from last night bringing the death toll to 120 this year so far.

Then there are the articles on the lack of funding for public education and my mind starts spinning off on the correlation between the two that no one seems to be making.

The sports section has some good news...the Oakland A's shut out the Minnesota Twins this past week and the CAL Bears beat whoever they were playing in their homecoming game yesterday. But, really, sports news is only exciting to those who actually care about sports.

So I'm left feel cranky by the whole exercise. I suppose I shouldn't blame the news, entirely...I'm PMS-y today and I decided last night that I would enjoy my Saturday evening home by watching crime dramas and reading my new book, "The Borderline Mother." While it passed the time, it wasn't very uplifting.

One good note...I did put together a pretty rockin' pirate outfit, complete with plastic knife I can stick between my teeth as I board the vessel we be invading....oh! *ahem* Got a little carried away there. So I'm covered for tonight, and have my Halloween costume for work, all in one fell swoop.

I need a shower and to do some laundry, so I leave you all to what I hope is a happier Sunday morning.

Spins, someone once said that they prefered the sports page to the front page because the sports page celebrates accomplishments, whereas the front page celebrates failures. Just thought you might like to know. Have a good Sunday.

Still, I'd swap SF or Oakland for Crapsville, in a shot.

The news does tend to be depressing, but pirate costumes aren't! *G*
