"Yes, we have no bananas!"

So I may be biting off a bit more than I can chew (hee, hee), but I wanted to follow up the drinks post with a post about food. At the end of the post, I'll share a bit of news that is sure to turn your stomach...don't worry, I'll warn you.

Breakfast: I've long understood the necessity of a good breakfast. I was never one of those girls who could have an apple and be fine until lunch. My breakfast mainstay is toast with peanut butter or a boiled egg. I like to have my cup of something hot in the a.m., and usually a banana. Bananas for me are a distinctly breakfast fruit. In a pinch a bagel or donut on the fly is just fine, too.

Lunch: I struggle with lunches...it is so expensive to eat out all the time, but actually making the time in the a.m. to get the lunch together is so hard for me. I'd be happy for a nice, comprehensive salad bar everyday. When I was living in DC, the place I worked had an excellent cafeteria with a good salad bar. They are the first and only work cafeteria I've known to serve steamed butternut squash! Mmmmm! I've discovered that Trader Joe's has excellent salads or small pizzas that are easy to do for lunch. This has been my saving grace lately.

Dinner: I would like to say that I cook dinner more often than I do. But I don't. There was a time when I would cook up a storm - soups, casseroles, you name it. But my life has gotten much busier since then. My favorite dinner out is the Tricolore Pizza Salad at the California Pizza Kitchen. My favorite non-veg dinner is my mom's Beef Stroganoff. My favorite veg home cooked dinner...a lovely couscous casserole with cheese and pine nuts.

Dessert: Ahh, sugary goodness. You all know that I am a fan of chocolate. My favorite restaurant has a vegan mocha chocolate cake that has you asking the question, "How can this be vegan?" But my favorite dessert of all is from a restaurant in San Francisco, Chow. It is a Myer Lemon Cake, and OMG! it is ridiculous good. I would order it over chocolate anything anyday!

So if you don't want to be put off you feed, please do not read this distressing bit: The governor of the state of South Dakota has signed into law a bill that bans abortions in the state. The ban allows for abortions only in cases in which the woman's life would be in danger, but not in cases of rape or incest. It will take a lot of time for this to go through the courts...but here is the test case that the freaks who wish to impose their morals on us all have been waiting for - and the Supreme Court of their wet dreams, to top it off.

I'm feeling the need to quote a little Sweet Honey in the Rock...this is from Colours: "Now the president and all his men dare to try to say/When I might or when I may/Make the decisions that they set me up for anyway/Insult my mind, my rights, the issues of my womb/Womb, womb, womb...

oooh, I should make that couscous casserole!!!
I've always been a bad salad eater, and have never been much for dressing, but lately I've been tossing crumbled blue cheese, sunflower seeds and craisins on lettuce, and it's pretty tasty. I'm too cheap to eat out much (my tax guy says I'm "frugal" :) )

I used to make my lunch the night before to save time, but it sounds like you've already found an excellent solution. :0)

As for the abortion in South Dakota issue, it just leaves me feeling so sad and angry.

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, though I rarely have any. What shall I have today, hmmm?

Sad, isn't it Spinny? I'd talk about food, but you're right, its enough to make your stomach turn! I can't understand how any person could think they have a right to make medical decisions about other people's bodies. I don't. At all.

This is a frightening precedent, and I don't like it one bit.

Flash, my advice is late, but I think you should have pancakes and bacon for breakfast. I'm having a scone and a latte.

As for the SD situation, it was inevitable that this would happen somewhere sometime soon, but it does just leave me feeling a bit sick.
